I had SO much fun last night! I went line dancing about an hour away with a couple of friends. This is the third time I've gone, but this time I wore a dress instead of jeans and a tank top. Funny how that simple change suddenly makes me popular! Hahaha! And, of course, I was rocking my cowgirl boots. I ran into a little problem, though. We generally avoid bringing our purses in with us so we don't have to worry about them while we're dancing. In the past I've just shoved my phone, ID, and money in my pockets and called it good. This time I had no pockets. I was contemplating this predicament as I was driving to meet up with my friends when I came up with a solution - my boots! I always wear boot socks with them when I go dancing to avoid major blisters, so I shoved everything down my thick blister-protectors last night.
For the most part this worked fine. My phone would slip down around my ankle when I was stomping, but I'd just pull it back up after the dance was over. However, at one point I must have pulled it up too far and then...well, I'm not entirely sure what step I was doing when it happened, but my phone flew out of my boot. I didn't see it, but I heard a little ka-thunk that wasn't part of the dance and glanced down. I swooped it up and held it the rest of the dance, then shoved it down my sock again. It wasn't until I stopped for some french fries on my way home that I discovered I'd killed it. Bummer. Good thing I was planning to get a new phone this week! Hahaha!
There was one song that came on last night that was a whole lot of fun. I don't remember what it was, I just remember that no one was dancing! Usually someone will go out on the floor and start a line dance and people will join in. Unfortunately, I don't know any well enough to just start one on my own - especially because I wouldn't know which one to fit with the music. There were two middle-aged women standing in front of the band, just grooving (or so I thought - it turns out they were actually doing a dance but it looked like they were just grooving) so I poked one of my friends and said, "Let's go join them!" The music was way too fun to just sit out! We ran up there - I discovered a humongous fan that nearly gave me a Marilyn Monroe moment - and started busting all kinds of moves! We were just dancing, shaking, twirling and tossing a few random line dancing moves in for the spirit of the place. A few more people ran onto the floor and started dancing, so we had a little party!
Afterward, I discovered that some people sitting out thought my friend and I were doing an actual dance. Hahaha! I thought that was hilarious! I told one guy, "Nope! I didn't know what I was doing! I was just making shit up!" He refused to believe me. Whatever! It wasn't long after that dance that I got wing-manned! At first I wasn't going to, but when I found out he was from Connecticut I figured what the heck and went over to talk to him. It was his first time ever at a "country bar" and I managed to convince him to come out on the dance floor even though he just stood to the side. I told him it was a super easy dance, but if he was too chicken to try he could at least stomp when everyone else did! I joined the dance and was assured afterward that he stomped, so I guess I got him to do something. Meh.
My mom asked me yesterday afternoon if we'd ever done the Cotton Eye Joe. The only two times I'd been there, we hadn't, but I had done it in High School (at prom, even!). I couldn't remember the moves exactly, but I knew it was easy enough to catch on, so when I heard it start up last night I ran onto the stage and started following the people in front of me. Apparently there are a few different ways to dance this. The way I learned in High School (the traditional dance) gives you time to breathe. The people in front of me were doing a breath-defying cowboy gambol, making a circle around the floor. I was just moving along at my own pace, people galloping wildly past me on all sides, and I still had to bow out early for fear of an asthma attack! After I shuffle-twirled off the floor I saw there was a group in the middle of the circle doing the traditional dance, but I was in desperate need of water so I didn't join.
I will say this about line dancing: It keeps you in shape! And it builds your endurance if you keep doing it! I did far more dancing tonight than I had before. It was great!
