Guaranteed Way to Get Customer Service

You know how when you go to the store and can't find what you're looking for, the sales attendants or shelf-stockers suddenly disappear like cockroaches when the lights turn on and then you're left wandering up and down aisles and rearranging shelves, trying to find whatever it is you need?

I discovered a solution to the problem.

When I was a freshman in college I was bored, depressed, and couldn't have a car on campus. When I needed to get away, I'd hop on the bus that went to Meijer and wander around the store for an hour or so. During my walkabouts, I discovered, completely by accident, a sure-fire way to get customer service whenever I needed it.

Wear shoes that click.

When I suspected I was on to something, I began a social experiment. Some days I'd specifically wear tennis shoes and see what would happen. Zilch. No customer service whatsoever. Then, I'd go again and change things up. I'd wear boots or heels that clicked when I walked. On those trips, I always had employees asking if I needed help finding anything.

It wasn't just guys hoping to find a stiletto-clad hottie drawn to the clippety-clopping of my shoes. Rather, men and women of all (workable) ages would be drawn by the sound.

I'd say it worked about 98% of the time.

It has been about eight years, and I still find it a useful tool. If I know before I leave the house that I'm likely to need customer service, I purposefully put on loud shoes and walk briskly in the store.

That's another thing, if you walk too slow, you'll come across (subconsciously) as hesitant and unsure, which you'd think would get people to help you, but the truth is many employees don't want to deal with someone who's hesitant or wishy-washy. Walking briskly in the loud shoes commands attention and subconsciously alerts employees that you know precisely what you want and you won't be wasting a lot of their time getting it. They ask, you tell them, they show you, and BAM! You're done. Home run.

So, next time you need assistance in a store, be sure you're wearing clickable shoes. They don't have to be high heels. They just need to make noise when you walk. (Cowboy boots can work, too, if you let the heels fall heavily with every step.)

Happy Shopping.
